Mrs Amos takes up the challenge(s)

Over the summer months Mrs Amos is setting herself some rather hard challenges to raise money for a variety of charities. She would be very grateful if you would like to sponsor her. Details as follows:

The Black Mountain Challenge - 12th May
This is an 18 mile trek to raise money for the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team – details of
how to donate to follow.

National Three Peaks Challenge - 14th and 15th July
The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in England, Wales
and Scotland, within 24 hours. The three peaks are:
• Snowdon, in Wales (1085m)
• Scafell Pike, in England (978m)
• Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1344m)

New York Marathon - 4th November
Mrs Amos has just heard this week that she has been accepted for the New York Marathon
so details of her chosen charity will follow shortly.

Road Traffic Person

The Governors of our school are looking to appoint a Road Traffic Person to assist with the safety of our pupils on the road directly outside school. School Road Traffic Patrols operate daily during the term time. Governors have agreed a rate of pay for this post and criteria for selection. If you think you may be interested or know someone who you think may be suitable please come and see me, where I can explain in more detail what the post involves.

Year 6 Induction

We have been informed by the Local Authority that the Secondary Head Teachers Group have decided on a set day for Yr6 Induction. This will be the last Thursday of June. Therefore, this year the Induction Day for pupils and evening meeting for parents will take place on Thursday 28th June. Information from you chosen Secondary School should be available soon.

Comenius - the Final Countdown

We are in the final term of our Comenius Project, which has seen exchange of information and visit for staff and children to our partner schools in Redditch, Sweden, Spain and Italy. This current partnership will end with a visit to Mordiford. The week beginning Sunday 27th May we will host teachers from Redditch, Sweden, Spain and Italy as well as 5 children from Sweden and 6 from Italy.

We have a packed programme for the week which involves “Taste of Adventure” activities, bowling, street party, bingo, Olympic sports, special assemblies, forest school, tours of Hereford and a special Jubilee Show. Please check the diary dates for events which we would like you to join in.

Thank you to all those parents who have volunteered to host children, your help and support is very much appreciated.

Mrs Broadbridge, as always, works extremely hard in co-ordinating and organising global activities, she has submitted another application for a Comenius group and if successful a new project with a different group of countries will begin in September. I will let you know when and if we are successful.

Jubilee Summer

I think this must be the wettest start of term on record! It is certainly hard to believe this is summer term! Hopefully we will see some sunshine soon especially with the Jubilee Celebrations only weeks away. Many events are being organised the village over the weekend of 1st - 4th of June and all are welcome to take part.

We have just heard from the Forestry Commission that planned felling of trees is due to start this week for a period of 3 weeks. For the children’s own safety Forest School will be held on school grounds for the next 3 weeks where children will help Mrs Parrett develop our own site on school premises. Children will still need to bring outdoor kit.

We sang up!

Alison Bell of Herefordshire Music Service invited Mordiford to join a 'Sing Up' workshop at the Birmingham's Symphony Hall.

We felt very honoured as there were only a couple of schools from Herefordshire attending. Year One and Two learnt some songs ahead of the day to sing with the rest of the participants. We also learnt some new songs at the event.

Summer Uniform

With the improvement in the weather recently many of you will be thinking about summer uniform. Girls may wear a checked (not striped) red and white summer dress with grey/black or white socks and black shoes/sandals. Boys may wear grey (not black) shorts with black/white or grey socks and black shoes/sandals.

Zimbe – Massed Choir Concert

Thank you to all the children who took part in the Zimbe concert, it was a lovely experience for everyone. Our thanks go to Mrs Oakley who continues to provide our children with varied musical experiences.

School Lunches

There is a slight change in ordering of school lunches in the summer term. Orders are still placed on a Friday but there is no need to complete a menu slip. Instead, place your choices on the outside of the envelope in the square for each day. Please indicate m (meat) v (vegetarian) j (jacket potato) - thank you.

This Wednesday (28 March) at 7pm, Hereford Cathedral School and Friends, supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, present the Choral & Orchestral Concert 'Zimbe' in Hereford Cathedral. During this concert there are students representing Mordiford CE Primary School singing, they will be joined by over 400 other students from 15 schools and choirs across Herefordshire. Concert tickets are still available from Hereford Cathedral School's Music School (01432 363531) and the 'Outback' Music Shop on Church Street (Hereford), at £10 per ticket for the Nave and £5 per ticket for the Transept. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

ThinkTank

Year 6 and Year 3 will be using the Forest School site with Mrs Parrett over the term (Yr 6 for the first half term and Yr 3 for the second half term). We are dependant on parental help for these sessions and I am very grateful to all parents who volunteer to help with these. Year 4 will spend the whole of the last week of term at Forest School.

It's all going swimmingly

Frome and Arrow class are swimming this term. We ask for a donation of £10 per pupil towards the cost of pool side instructors and lifeguards. Please could you place this in a marked envelope and send into school as soon as possible, thank you.

Let's reduce congestion

In 2012 we want everyone to make a huge effort to ease the congestion in the village. This can be done by considerate parking where access is not obstructed; car sharing and limiting time that parked cars are left. There is a member of staff on duty in the playground from 8.35am and we are happy to take responsibility for children from this time if you feel this would help to make a quicker drop off.

2012 is already going swimmingly

During the Spring Term Frome and Arrow Classes will be swimming each Monday.

Year 6 will be visiting Forest School every Wednesday for the first half of term followed by Year 3 in the second half of the term.

Apricots for lunch

We are really pleased with the quality of meal produced by Apricot Catering; many of you were able to sample these at the Taster Session on Tuesday 29 November. There will be a slight tweaking of the menu in response to feedback from parents and children and this will be with you before the Spring Term. Orders for the following weeks meals need to be made on a Friday morning please.

Playing in concert

Tickets have already been distributed for the KS2 performances on 8, 9, and 12 December. KS1 Carol Services are on Tuesday 13 December at 1.30pm and Wednesday 14 December at 5pm.
